Information About Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships

If you’re considering furthering your education, whether it be for a Masters or Doctoral degree, you may also be considering your options for affording it. Aside from dipping into your savings or going the traditional route of taking out loans, your desired university can also offer you some financial support through a graduate scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship.

What is a Graduate Assistantship?
The purpose of the Graduate Assistant program is to provide a graduate student the opportunity to supplement coursework with practical experience related to the student’s program of study and career objectives. Assistantships are an extension to, and application of, classroom instruction through hands-on experience with guidance from experienced faculty, administrators, or staff.

At St. John’s University, a limited number of Graduate Assistantships and University Fellowships are granted to various departments within each School and College.  With few exceptions, Master’s Assistants are required to teach and/or conduct research for 15-20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters. Doctoral Fellows will be required to work 18-20 hours per week as teachers and/or researchers. In nearly all cases, students must be enrolled in a program of study affiliated with the department or program offering the assistantship.

The number of Graduate Assistantships and Doctoral Fellowships vary each year, as such if you are interested in obtaining one of these coveted positions, please contact the department for further information about whether positions are presently available.

For more information about Graduate Assistantships that are not directly affiliated with a particular department, please visit our website. Thank you for your interest in graduate study at St. John's University.
